Acupuncture - Questions Answered

Usually when I mention that I am an Acupuncture physician, I get bombarded with questions. How does it work? Does it hurt? Can it help me? How long will it take? Many people are amazed at how effective Oriental medicine can be and they wish they would've tried it sooner. Here are just some of the answers to the most frequently asked questions about Acupuncture and Oriental medicine.

Think of your body as a garden. What you eat, the medicine you take and your activity level all nourish your body and are similar to the garden hose. When your body is filled with poor dietary choices, multiple medications and minimal activity keeping the hose inflexible, the hose kinks and is unable to nourish the garden which will then slowly wilt. Western medication is the watering can. It can quickly nourish the plants and keep them alive but ultimately, it's not taking care of the kink in the hose which has now caused a severe back up of water that's affecting the spout. Wouldn't it just be easier to get the kink out of the hose? That is where Acupuncture comes in.

Acupuncture is an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is based on ideas and theories formulated thousands of years ago. It is the insertion of very fine needles into specific sites on the body chosen according to guiding TCM principles. Acupuncture encourages your body's natural flow, whether that's of fluids, energy, nerve conduction, hormones, etc. and also produces a biochemical balance. Western science also has suggested theories for how Acupuncture works, including (1) conduction signals, (2) activation of opiods systems, and (3) changes in brain chemistry, sensation and involuntary body functions.(NCCAM Research Study, 2002)

When you take over the counter medications and pharmaceuticals you are most often just taking the quick fix but never treating the underlying problem. Many people suffer illness throughout their life. Chronic, Acute, Genetic, Contagious, everyone will come in contact with pathogens at some point but instead of treating the root of the problem, they focus directly on the symptoms. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and in the U.S. is most commonly used as a last ditch effort when in reality, it should be the first.
